Risk Assessment: Balancing AI Usage with Authentic Leadership

Risks of AI

ChatGPT can make mistakes.

Gemini uses experimental technology and may sometimes provide inaccurate or offensive content that doesn't represent Google's views.

Use discretion before relying on, publishing, or otherwise using content provided AI.

It’s true. Artificial Intelligence is not infallible, and the tech companies that power them aren’t exactly shy about saying it.

The premise and technology behind these ubiquitous AI-driven tools is simple. AI has harnessed the power of a simple, transformative formula:

Data Analysis + Intuitive Algorithm = Better Results

And yet, no conversation about integrating AI-assisted tools into the workplace would be complete without addressing an uncomfortable truth: Even with all its virtues, leading with AI-assisted tools brings notable risks worth acknowledging.

What are the risks of leading with AI?

More specifically, relying too heavily on AI tools can:

  • Create bias

  • Impair emotional intelligence

  • Create an over-dependence on AI-assisted technology,

  • Cut off human connection in the workplace. These risks can directly undermine leadership development, workplace dynamics, and team morale

Bias and Emotional Intelligence

These examples are only a few of the potential problems with AI. To be sure, AI can be an effective resource, but in order for leaders to mitigate the risks, they must first understand what they are.

One of the most significant risks AI poses to leadership development is the erosion of emotional intelligence. Leadership is not just about making the right decisions based on data– it requires heart.

Great leadership includes empathy, active listening, and the ability to navigate human emotions. While AI can be a tool in teaching these qualities, it can’t replicate or replace them.

Additionally, measuring emotional intelligence is complex, and existing AI measurement tools can create biased results because of the subjective nature of emotions.  AI can analyze behavior patterns, but it cannot understand personal struggles, emotions, or the nuances of human relationships. If leaders depend on AI to assess their teams rather than engaging with employees directly, they risk being swayed by bias information.

Over-Reliance

AI has enhanced leaders’ ability to process, categorize, and watch trends in data. This is an excellent tool. However, leadership requires more than data analysis– it involves intuition, experience, and ethical judgment.

If leaders rely too heavily on these automations, there could be unintended consequences. Here are a few examples:

  • Less critical thinking: Leaders could form a habit of defaulting to AI-generated insights instead of using their own problem-solving skills.

  • Ethical dilemmas: AI operates based on pre-set algorithms that may not align with ethical considerations. Leaders have to still evaluate the moral implications of decisions, especially when they impact employees or customers.

  • Sacrificing innovation: Creativity and risk-taking could be an unfortunate casualty of the AI revolution if leaders made decisions based solely on AI.

Impersonal Workplaces

A great culture is a reflection of a great leader.

These leaders foster inspiring, engaging workspaces where employees feel a sense of community and loyalty. This culture is built on a foundation of meaningful interpersonal communication and mutual respect.

If AI replaces these innately human experiences– employee evaluations, feedback channels, and leadership coaching –it can erode trust and do irreparable harm to your workplace relationships.

Employees want to feel seen, heard, and valued. AI-driven communication tools can streamline operations, but they cannot replace them.

While AI can be a valuable tool, it should complement rather than replace human judgment in leadership. By using AI strategically while maintaining human-centered leadership, leaders can navigate the future with wisdom and integrity.
